How to issue challengesFilm challenges generally require a time commitment of at least a week. The challenges I've designed are meant to take place within the academic day. Because I teach middle school, I tend to issue film challenges that occur over the course of several days with only one hour of work time per day. The challenges on this site are designed according to two different levels of time commitment: 5 hour challenges and 10 hour challenges.

How do I issue a film challenge to my students:
Typically, I begin a film challenge by introducing the challenge concept to students. Either as a whole class or in small groups, students explore the challenge webpage in order to gain an understanding the film genre and/or other technical aspects the challenge may include.
From that point, students are given subsequent class periods to work on their challenge. Given my position as a middle school teacher, my students are allowed to work one hour per day until the challenge is complete. The pace at which students work and the process they use to complete the challenge is entirely up to them. I act as a facilitator, but try to be as hands-off as possible and generally respond to questions with, "What do you think?"
It is important to note that before I issue a challenge, my students have already completed several smaller digital storytelling projects and are familiar with the editing platform we use: iMovie for iPad and/or iMovie for Macbook.
